The Alpha Psi Lambda Foundation, originally named the Alpha Psi Lambda Housing Foundation, was established on April 23, 1967, by a group of visionary leaders: Brother W.J. Davis (President), Brother James O. Jackson (Secretary), and Brother I.C. Brown (Treasurer). The foundation was conceived with a singular mission—to create opportunities for young black males in the Columbia area, focusing on uplifting and inspiring the next generation of leaders through education, mentorship, and community support.
In its early years, the foundation concentrated on addressing the immediate needs of the community by providing housing and support services. However, as the needs of the community evolved, so did the foundation’s mission and activities. Recognizing the broader challenges and opportunities facing young black males, the organization expanded its scope to include a wide range of programs aimed at fostering personal and professional growth.
In 2018, the organization underwent a significant transformation, renaming itself the Alpha Psi Lambda Foundation to better reflect its expanded mission and comprehensive approach to community service. This change marked a new chapter in the foundation’s history, reinforcing its commitment to serving as a beacon of hope and empowerment in the Historic Waverly community and beyond.
How We Make
an Impact
Over the decades, the foundation has implemented a variety of impactful programs designed to address critical issues facing young Black males. These initiatives include mentoring programs that provide guidance and support, scholarships to assist with educational expenses, and community relief efforts to help those in need. The foundation has also developed educational programs covering essential topics such as safe sex, financial literacy, etiquette, and job readiness, equipping young men with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in life.
A cornerstone of the foundation’s efforts has been its scholarship program. Since its inception, the Alpha Psi Lambda Foundation has awarded hundreds of scholarships, distributing thousands of dollars to students who demonstrate excellence in both academics and community service. These scholarships have made a significant impact, enabling recipients to pursue higher education and achieve their career goals.
